Radon in… Water?

As homeowners become more informed of the risks associated to higher than acceptable Radon levels in their homes and businesses, more and more Radon Mitigation Systems are being installed that successfully reduce the Radon levels in the inside air to a safe level. What many homeowners still do not realize is that Radon can also enter your home, and your body, through your home’s water supply, often requiring a separate Radon Mitigation System capable of addressing this Radon issue before the water reaches your tap.

Disaster Blaster is very proud to be an Industry Leader in the Mitigation and Restoration Industry, with a focus on Indoor Environmental Hazards such as Radon, Asbestos, Water Damage, and Mold. In further commitment to assisting our customers and local community in resolving indoor environmental hazards in their homes and businesses, Gary Lyons from our offices has completed the “Radon in Water” course through Rutgers University, expanding our ability to address our customer’s Radon concerns to Radon contamination in home water supplies. To our knowledge, we are the first company to offer this service to the Northeastern PA area.

While Radon in water certainly carries a risk due to ingestion, it has also been shown to contribute to the airborn Radon level within the home, as water is run for showers or to do the dishes. As a result, it is recommended that high Radon levels in water supplies, much like high Radon levels in indoor air, be addressed properly through installation of a Radon Mitigation System. In a proposed rule, the Federal EPA has recommended that water supplies testing higher than 4,000 pCi/L of Radon have a Mitigation System installed.

While a standard Radon Mitigation System designed to address Radon levels in indoor air essentially vents the Radon gas to the outside of the home (Above the roof line), Radon in water requires a system that reduces the Radon level in the water to an acceptable level prior to use.

We at Disaster Blaster are very excited to be able to offer this service to our customers and local communities. Should you have a high Radon level in your water supply, please contact your local Disaster Blaster office! We’re happy to help you reduce this Radon level to an acceptable range.
