The Structural Ramifications of Mold Growth!

Mold is an incredibly invasive organism, laying claim via spore to any viable structural material it comes in contact with. Unfortunately for homeowners, Mold views almost every structural material in your home or business as viable, which presents a lot of issues.

Mold

The truth of the matter is that once mold has been able to build a visible colony, you’re already losing the battle. Left unchecked, mold is able to spread incredibly quickly, spreading spores from room to room and throughout the rest of your property. These spores are essentially ‘colonists’, searching out another part of your home to lay claim to. It’s not unlike a Sci-Fi movie…

Luckily for us, we’re not unarmed in our battle against the invasion of mold growth in a structure. With the proper equipment and knowledge (Both of which Disaster Blaster has), it is possible to cease the spread of mold as well as restore the property to a pre-mold condition.

Mold Testing

While mold spores are everywhere, mold essentially needs three things in order to grow; A food source (viable structural material), an acceptable temperature range, and moisture. Though we really can’t do much about the first two, the third, moisture, does offer us a good way of preventing mold growth from the start. By eliminating or repairing a source of moisture, a leaky pipe for instance, we also eliminate mold’s ability to grow and colonize your property. In the case of unexpected Water Damage or Flood, fast response is key as a Local Mitigation and Restoration Company, such as Disaster Blaster, is able to limit the scope of damages and prevent mold growth if contacted quickly.

But what does Mold do?

When mold colonizes a structural component, such as a wooden beam, it roots into the material much like a plant roots into the soil. This not only makes it much more difficult to completely remove, but also, over time, weakens the strength and structural integrity of the material. If not addressed timely, this can necessitate the replacement of the affected structural component.

As the mold feeds upon the structural materials, it releases mycotoxins, which have been shown to cause health issues and aggravate allergies in some people. Proper removal of the mold growth will eliminate the production of mycotoxins, eliminating this hazard.

Once mold has successfully colonized a location, it will begin to release spores in search of another place to lay claim. It is an endless cycle ended only when proper Mold Remediation addresses the issue and removes the contamination. Improper Mold Cleanup as well can cause the mold colony to release mold spores as a defensive measure that spreads the mold growth and further contaminates the property.

Additionally, mold is not only able to grow on the front of structural components such as walls, but also within wall cavities and in other hard to reach areas. As with mold growth on the front of these structural components, failure to remedy mold growth within cavities and less visible areas can result in weakened structural integrity.

The complexities of Mold Remediation necessitate the Indoor Environment Expertise that has made Disaster Blaster a leader in the mitigation & restoration industry. If you have a mold issue, please contact your local Disaster Blaster! We’re happy to help and as always, We’re Here For You.
