How does Disaster Blaster help after a tornado?

The strong winds and rain that accompany a tornado can result in significant damage to commercial and residential properties in its path, but that unfortunately isn’t where the potential for damage ends.

What do the different Hurricane categories mean?

As tornadoes can vary significantly in strength and potential for damage, the Enhanced F-scale is used to rate tornadoes for classification (EF0 through EF5) based on their estimated wind speeds and resultant damage.  It is important to keep in mind that, while tornadoes can vary drastically in size (ranging from a few yards to over one mile in width), shape, and land speed (with some tornadoes moving so slowly that they appear nearly stationary while others cover land at up to 60 miles per hour), these factors are not effective means of determining the strength or potential for damage that a tornado may represent.

The Enhanced F-scale breaks tornado into 3 different categories, weak, strong, and violent.

Weak

EF0 Tornado: Wind Speeds of 65 to 85 mph.

EF1 Tornado: Wind Speeds of 86 to 110 mph.

Strong

EF2 Tornado: Wind Speeds of 111 to 135 mph.

EF3 Tornado: Wind Speeds of 136 to 165 mph.

Violent

EF 4 Tornado: Wind Speeds of 166 to 200 mph.

EF 5 Tornado: Wind Speeds of Over 200 mph.

Tips to stay safe during a tornado

During a tornado:

  • During a tornado, the safest place to be is in an underground shelter, basement, or safe room. If no underground shelter is available, a small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level of a sturdy building is the safest alternative.
  • Mobile homes are not safe during tornadoes or severe winds, so it is recommended to seek safety in a sturdy building or structure.
  • Large spaces such as auditoriums and warehouses do not provide safe shelter during a tornado and are not recommended.
  • Do not go outside or attempt to take pictures of, or watch, the storm.
  • Cover your head with your arms, a mattress, or heavy blanket.
  • Stay away from windows.

After a Tornado:

  • Continue listening to local news or radio for updated information about he storm.
  • Stay out of damaged buildings.
  • Be alert for potential hazards such as broken glass and debris that could result in injury.
  • Watch for fallen power lines or broken gas lines and report them to the utility company immediately.
  • If you suffered damage as a result of the tornado or storm, take pictures of any damage to the building (commercial property, house, garage, etc.) and any contents that were damaged for insurance claims purposes.

Does Homeowners Insurance cover Tornado Damage?

For the most part, Tornado damage is covered by most home insurance policies.  Damage caused by wind and debris is often covered by most homeowners insurance policies, while secondary damage such as Mold contamination may be covered in some policies while not covered in others.  It is always recommended to review your specific policy with your local Insurance Agent so that they can provide you with information specific to your coverages and ensure that you are adequately covered in the event that you experience a claim in the future.

What you should do after a Tornado

What you should NOT do after a Tornado

Don’t Use Your Property’s Electric Service

Until it’s been inspected and determined to be safe, use of your property’s electric service can be very dangerous.

Don’t Assume Things are Dry

What ‘feels dry’ often isn’t dry. This is why Disaster Blaster Pros use specialized equipment to monitor drying when necessary
as part of our Tornado Damage Response.

Don't Wait

Water Damage and Mold issues can worsen quickly. When you discover tornado damage, contact your local Disaster Blaster right away so that it can be addressed before additional damage occurs.

Don’t Complete Repairs Until Everything is Dry

Completing repairs before everything is dry can lead to mold and other issues.

Don’t Use Fans if there is Mold

Mold spores can be spread around by air movement, so it’s recommended not to use fans if mold is present.
