The primary difference between tropical storms and hurricanes is their sustained wind speed. While tropical storms may have a sustained wind speed of between 39 and 73 miles per hour, hurricanes are stronger and maintain sustained wind speeds of at least 74 miles per hour.
It’s important to recognize that whether a storm reaches the requirements of a hurricane or remains a tropical storm, they can each result in significant property damage.
As hurricanes can vary significantly in strength, the Saffir Simpson scale is used to rate hurricanes for classification (1 through 5). Hurricane categories are intended to estimate potential property damage and are based solely on the hurricane’s sustained wind speed. Hurricane categories do not take into consideration rainfall, storm surge, or flooding.
Category 1 Hurricane: Sustained winds of 74 to 95 mph. This is generally strong enough to produce some damage and power outages.
Category 2 Hurricane: Sustained winds between 96 and 110 mph. This has the potential to cause significant damage.
Category 3 Hurricane: Sustained winds of 111 to 129 mph. This is considered a major hurricane and has the potential to cause devastating damage. Category 3 hurricanes can not only cause extensive property damage, but may damage infrastructure resulting in interruptions in electricity or water services for days or even weeks.
Category 4 Hurricane: Sustained winds of 130 to 156 mph. This is considered a catastrophic hurricane and has the power to cause immense damage to buildings and property in its path, uproot trees, cause extensive damage to infrastructure (electric, water, roads / transportation systems, etc.).
Category 5 Hurricane: Sustained winds of more than 157 mph. There is no higher category storm. Category 5 hurricanes have the highest potential to cause damage and have the ability to devastate large areas. With winds exceeding 157 mph, Category 5 storms can destroy anything in their paths, including buildings and infrastructure, and can create massive storm surges that cause significant flooding.
Flooding often accompanies hurricanes due to the significant amount of rainfall they can produce and their potential for storm surge events. As a result, flooding can impact large areas following a hurricane, causing significant additional damage, sometimes to properties that weren’t directly damaged by the hurricane.
When flood waters enter your home, they can cause a tremendous amount of damage very quickly. In addition to the initial damage to the structure and contents, this large volume of water has the potential to wick into building materials, causing significant additional damages and mold growth!
Disaster Blaster knows flood damage and our technicians have the skills and equipment to help. From the initial cleanup and drying to mold remediation and repairs, we can do it all!
Due to the diversity in damage that hurricanes can cause, hurricane damage coverage can be greatly impacted by what damage actually occurred. While wind and debris damage is often covered by most homeowners insurance policies, damage from things like flood and rising water often is not (this generally requires specialty flood coverage). Additionally, depending on where your property is, some insurance companies may specifically exclude coverage for hurricane damage or set different coverage limits and policy terms.
Mold can develop quickly following a hurricane due to the extent of water damage and the level of contaminants in the water itself. As a result, it’s important to hire qualified professionals able to address mold issues as well.

As a full service company, our professionals will be able to assess your property for mold issues that may have begun and develop a response plan to address all of these issues together.
