Should Radon Mitigation Bids Be Given Over The Phone?

Office phone

In today’s world, consumers are busier than ever and, as a result, tend to be more conscious of their time. As a result, we often find that potential customers are seeking Radon job proposals and estimates over the phone. While it is often possible to give a reasonably accurate job price via phone for some services ( Duct Cleaning, for example ), other services should never be quoted over the phone.

Recently, we have found more and more Radon Mitigation Companies giving phone quotes. Most of these companies are not truly local to our area but are using local phone numbers to appear nearby. Since these companies are not local, they are reluctant to incur the expense associated to fully and properly inspect or evaluate your radon exposure and to properly plan for and price the best radon mitigation system for your situation. Instead, the quote you receive by phone is a “one size – fits all” solution that has no consideration for potential energy / electricity savings, nor the attractiveness and overall efficiency and effectiveness of the system.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the many state agencies across the country recommend that radon levels be reduced to “at least” a level of below 4 pCi/L. To that end, the U. S. EPA has stated specifically: “Any radon exposure has some risk of causing lung cancer. The lower the radon level in your home, the lower your family’s risk of lung cancer.” Accordingly, the level of below 4 pCi/L set by the EPA is strictly a goal and the U. S. EPA expect licensed professional radon mitigation companies to strive to achieve radon levels well below this goal wherever possible.

In order to achieve the “lowest possible” radon level in your building, it is necessary to fully inspect the building to determine what is appropriate in your individual situation. Most industry professionals, as well as state agencies, recognize this need for a proper inspection prior to quoting the job and, as such, discourages the use of quotes by phone.
