- How does Radon gas enter your home? You may have heard of Radon gas, but have you ever wondered where it comes from or how it gets into your house? Radon gas is a radioactive byproduct of the breakdown of uranium that naturally occurs in rock and soil. As this reaction occurs, the created Radon gas, which is lighter than air, works its way to the surface where it disperses. Where this becomes an issue is when Radon gas collects inside homes where it's unable to escape, and where property owners and occupants can be exposed to high concentrations of Radon gas. This exposure has been linked to 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States, making it the second leading cause of lung cancer behind cigarettes, and the number one leading cause among non-smokers. But how does Radon gas actually get inside your home? Many factors can actually impact the Radon level inside your home from where your home is located, to nearby construction, and even the geology beneath your home. When Radon gas is working its way to the surface, it is following the path of least resistance and that can lead it to your basement where it enters through cracks and gaps in the foundation, some pump pits and basement waterproofing systems, and unfinished areas like crawl spaces or dirt basement floors. The chimney effect caused by your furnace forcing air through your home could even create a vacuum that pulls Radon gas into your basement. Fortunately, Radon issues are relatively easy to remedy with the installation of a Radon mitigation system that pulls the Radon gas from below your basement floor and vents it above your roof line before it's able to collect inside your home. Radon Mitigation Systems are extremely efficient and designed to run continuously with little maintenance. While it may seem like Radon is a new issue, the fact of the matter is that Radon has always been here. We are just now aware of it and the hazard it represents. Since you can't smell, taste, or see Radon gas, it is recommended to have your home tested to determine if and to what extent you may have a Radon issue in your home so that it can be rectified by a professional.
