- What are the most common causes of home fires in the United States? One, cooking. The leading cause of residential fires starting almost half of all home fires. Cooking fires happen at any time of the year, but are particularly common on holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the 4th of July. Two, heating. The second leading cause of residential fires.
