What is a Biohazard?

Biohazard is a term used to describe dangerous biological agents, or the events that may pose a health risk due to the exposure to biological agents.  In our industry, this includes property damage with the potential to make you sick, such as sewage backup / drain backup, homicide / suicide events, infectious disease contamination, pest infestation, and hoarding.

These projects represent a significant risk of illness, and as a result additional precautions and steps are necessary to ensure that the work is performed safely and that the property is effectively disinfected and safe for you and your family.

What health hazards do you see with Hoarding projects?

When you think of hoarding situations, you probably think about stacks of boxes, maybe some old newspapers, or leftover food.  But hoarding situations can be, and often are, much worse.  Hoarding is not simply the result of someone that “collects things”, it’s often caused or exacerbated by someone that is overwhelmed by a living environment that has gotten out of control.  So, while if may start off with stacks of boxes, it can quickly include accumulations of trash, rotting food, pest infestation, and biological waste.

Due to the potential for health hazards in hoarding environments, it’s important to follow strict safety procedures during the process.  Your local Disaster Blaster has the skills and equipment to address hoarding issues safely and effectively for you!

Do you disinfect for Viruses?

Yes. Biohazard situations have the potential to introduce a variety of pathogens and infectious disease agents, including viruses.  As part of a Biohazard or Hoarding project, your local Disaster Blaster will complete detailed cleaning and disinfection steps to address potential health hazards that may be present.

Do you disinfect for Bacteria?

Yes. Bacteria is a leading cause of illness and a common pathogen found in Biohazard and Hoarding situations.  Our Disaster Blaster experts will disinfect the area thoroughly as part of the project to ensure that your property is safe again for you and your family.

What if there’s Mold?

Mold is a common issue that we discover during a Biohazard or Hoarding project, but don’t worry, Disaster Blaster is able to assist you with any necessary Mold Remediation as well!  With decades of experience in the industry, Disaster Blaster offers a wide range of services to help you get your home back.

What you should do if you find a Biohazard or Hoarding issue

Do Contact your local Disaster Blaster

Disaster Blaster knows how to address Biohazard & Hoarding issues, the potential health hazards, and any strong odors!

Do Contact a Plumber when necessary

For Biohazard situations such as sewage backup, a plumber will be necessary to repair the broken pipe. Most plumbers will prefer that the area be cleaned and disinfected by our Disaster Blaster experts first.

Do Limit Access to the affected area

Health hazards such as Virus’, Bacteria, and Mold could be present. Until the area is cleaned and thoroughly disinfected, you and your family should avoid going into that area as much as possible.

Do Save Pictures & Receipts

If the Biohazard or Hoarding damage is covered by your insurance company, they will want copies of pictures and any invoices for services that were performed.

Do Throw away non-salvageable items

Your local Disaster Blaster will explain what items can be salvaged and what items cannot. Common items that will need to be disposed of include porous items like boxes, carpeting, and clothing.

What you should NOT do if you find a Biohazard or Hoarding issue

Don’t Attempt to Dry it Yourself

Improper drying can make Biohazard issues much worse. Something as simple as the air movement from a fan could be spreading mold spores or pathogens into other areas.

Don’t attempt to keep contaminated items

Items that cannot safely be decontaminated should be disposed of as part of the Biohazard or Hoarding project. It is unsafe to attempt to save these items.

Don’t Wait

Pathogens & Mold spores can multiply quickly, potentially creating a much more serious health hazard. When you discover a Biohazard or Hoarding problem, contact your local Disaster Blaster right away.

Don’t Skip Professional Drying if necessary

Your local Disaster Blaster is able to provide drying services when necessary to prevent further moisture damage and mold growth. These services are important to ensure the project is completed effectively.

Don’t Try to Clean it Yourself

Biohazard and Hoarding situations can present serious health hazards, so it’s important to have professionals complete this work to ensure that it is completed safely and effectively.
